Heavy,stable and the switch is a dimmer switch,very cool!Kinda tricky getting the wires from the lamp into the pole,but just twist them up......nice lonnnnng cord!

I've had this lantern for a few weeks and it works great! It has been outside during some blustery fall storms where you would find alot of leaves and light to medium sized branches on the ground and the lantern did not blow over. My home is colonial style so I wanted to keep the style of our home and this fit in perfectly. I used a CFL and it works great, lighting the patio in the early evening. The matte black finish still looks good with no signs of weathering.
Note: One lamp would not be enough for nighttime, but provides good transitional light (day to evening) and when combined with other patio lighting it works great. Also it is about five feet tall, so if your looking for something taller, you may wish to look elsewhere.
